Is Social Media Really Working for Your Business? Why You Need a Consistent Strategic Marketing Plan
Social media has been a hot topic for business owners for as long as I can remember. In my 7+ years consulting, it’s consistently been one of the biggest stress points for coaches, consultants, and service providers.
Most business owners feel stuck in one of two mindsets:
Guilty they aren't posting enough.
Frustrated because it isn't leading to real business results.
If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, "I'm putting so much time into social media, so why aren't clients falling into my lap?"—you’re not alone.
The problem usually isn't your effort or your expertise. The problem is that social media is being evaluated through the wrong lens.
The Trap of Expecting Social Media to Do It All
It’s common to treat social media like its only job is to deliver signed clients. I post a thought leadership piece or a quick tip, and suddenly the expectation is that prospective clients will instantly hire me.
When that doesn't happen, it’s easy to assume social media "doesn't work" and get discouraged.
But expecting one channel to carry the weight of your entire business growth is short-sighted. Social media isn’t a standalone solution. It’s just one tool in your toolbelt, and it works best when integrated into your entire strategic marketing plan.
To build a sustainable business, you can’t rely on just one singular tactic. People need multiple touchpoints with your brand before they feel comfortable making a buying decision.
Where Social Media Fits in Your Marketing Funnel Framework
In my Marketing Funnel Framework, a healthy client journey has four main stages: Attract, Convert, Nurture, and Close.
Social media consistently plays two very important roles in this framework.
1. The Attract Phase
Social media gives you a public platform to reach new prospective clients who don't know you yet. It lets you share your expertise, talk about the problems you solve, and show up authentically to a broader audience.
2. The Nurture Phase
When prospective clients follow you on platforms like LinkedIn, your posts allow you to build a community. By showing up consistently with helpful content and engaging with others, you build trust and stay top-of-mind.
Social media is fantastic for attracting and nurturing. However, it rarely completes the entire client journey on its own.
The Missing Link: Moving Followers to the Convert Phase
If you want your social media efforts to yield real business results, you must give your audience a clear, intentional "next step."
Instead of asking readers to leap straight from a post to a high-ticket service, invite them to take a smaller, low pressure step into your world. This is where you move them from the Attract Phase to the Convert Phase by asking them to fill out a form.
Here are a few simple, high-value ways to give your audience a logical next step:
A Downloadable Resource: A quick checklist or guide that solves a specific pain point.
An On-Demand Masterclass: A short video or workshop teaching a key concept.
A Private Podcast: Exclusive audio episodes for listeners who want to go deeper.
An Email Course: A bite-sized educational series delivered to their inbox over a set number of days.
Once a prospective client fills out a form to access your resource, you earn a spot in their inbox. Now, you can nurture them through email marketing and social media simultaneously. These overlapping touchpoints make your marketing more effective and help build consistent, long-term trust.
Realigning Your Expectations for Better Results
Does this mean clients will never reach out directly from social media? Not at all!
I’ve had prospective clients send me private messages asking to book a discovery call because they’ve been quietly following my content for months. It happens to my clients, too.
Those moments happen because social media consistently demonstrates value and solves real problems over time—not because of a quick fix or high-pressure pitch.
When you stop looking at social media as a quick lead machine and start using it as one strategic piece of your broader marketing plan, the overwhelm disappears. You get clear on your message, you give your audience clear next steps, and your marketing becomes simple, focused, and effective.
